Sonnet 2

II.

If that apparent part of life's delight
Our tingled flesh-sense circumscribes were seen
By aught save reflex and co-carnal sight,
Joy, flesh and life might prove but a gross screen.
Haply Truth's body is no eyable being,
Appearance even as appearance lies,
Haply our close, dark, vague, warm sense of seeing
Is the choked vision of blindfolded eyes.
Wherefrom what comes to thought's sense of life? Nought.
All is either the irrational world we see
Or some aught-else whose being-unknown doth rot
Its use for our thought's use. Whence taketh me
A qualm-like ache of life, a body-deep
Soul-hate of what we seek and what we weep.

Fica bem

Beijos

Dear Oma (Avó em Afrikaans):

How I wish I had the ability to translate a poem. But poems are not to be translated... It would be a sin! At least by me! I'd unknowingly steal the most precious thing they have... Their emotions...
You see, we're always biased. We always translate leaving a bit of our heart in the words we chose...

Lots of love

Oh, Oma I forgot to say that this poem is originally in English. Fernando Pessoa lived and studied in South Africa.

Dear Renard, Yes, I know that F. Pessoa lived in South Africa but I thought that he witten in Englhish only as a child and this poem is too deep for a child's mind.
Generally speaking, I agree with you about translations. But I'm really proud of my translation of "If", by Kipling. And particularly because I translated it at highschool, when I attended my sixth school year (more or less what now is the 10th school year). Teresa de Longe has posted both.
Be happy, there are lots of people, me included, of course, who think a lot of you.
Kiss you, Oma
